Marathon Man Runs Across the Country to Raise Awareness

Ultramarathon man John Radich is living out his 40-year dream along Route 66.

Fifty-six year-old John Radich is traveling 3,400 miles across the US via the famed Route 66, motivated by the desire to raise awareness and donations for The Way to Happiness Foundation. A non-profit organization founded in 1984, the Foundation guides youth and adults toward happier, more moral and fulfilling lives.

Radich’s route has a history that begins in 1928, when over 200 men entered the Transcontinental Foot Race, also known as the “Bunion Derby,” along Route 66. Starting at Ascot Speedway in Los Angeles and ending in Madison Square Garden in New York City, only 55 of the original 200 made it to the finish line.

But Radich is determined to make it for The Way to Happiness Foundation, which achieves its aims through various programs in schools and businesses, centered around the book after which the Foundation was named. The Way to Happiness is a secular, common sense moral guide containing 21 inspiring and applicable precepts by author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard.

“I’ve been a supporter of The Way to Happiness Foundation since the 80’s and the booklet is phenomenal,” says Radich. “It’s great for any culture or creed. I have seen its influence and how it has helped handle a lack of trust and a lack of tolerance. These points are key things that we can all definitely improve upon and this book aids one in doing that.”
Though his purpose keeps him going, Radich admits it hasn’t been easy. He has endured blazing 115-degree weather, pouring rain, and the exhaustion of running an average of forty miles each day.

Yet for this marathon man the good days far outweigh the bad. “Ever since I read about the Bunion Derby in high school I’ve wanted to run across America,” says Radich. “There's so much history here on Route 66. People would travel west in search of a better life for themselves and their families. When I think of how many lives have been changed by following this one artery—that’s the kind of positive impact I hope to achieve by getting out the message of The Way to Happiness.”

As he advances along Route 66, Radich passes out free copies of The Way to Happiness booklets, which he restocks at strategic points along the way. He remarks that everyone he’s given the booklet to has positive feedback—whether a teacher, a police officer or a young person.

“I’ve had people tell me, ‘It’s so simple I can pass this on to my children, my dad, my brother or my son.’ Or someone will tell me after just briefly reading it, ‘My daughter needs to read this.’” When he encounters that kind of enthusiasm and success, John feels fulfilled and reinvigorated. “I am paving a little path to a road and a way for people,” he says.

Ghana: The Latest to Become Part of The Way to Happiness Family

The Way to Happiness Foundation recently launched its campaign in Ghana, by conducting a seminar at a junior high school built by the citizens of a small community.

Townspeople and school staff determined to do something about increasing crime among their young people, announced that they had chosen to introduce a Way to Happiness campaign as a means to both lower the crime rate and bring a sense of hope and happiness to all involved.

During the seminar, there was a lively exchange between faculty, administrators and the students about the twenty-one precepts of The Way to Happiness. Teachers plan to incorporate the information from this campaign into their classes as well.

The event also saw students proudly wearing “Be Competent” (precept 17) T-shirts, as they are now taking an active role in applying the precepts both in their school and home life. Accordingly, the word on the programs is now spreading, with other schools asking how they can become involved in The Way to Happiness. The next phase of the campaign in Ghana calls for at least 2,000 booklets in English and Ewe, one of the original native languages spoken in the mountain communities of Ghana.

Deaths from DUI Drops to Zero

The Way to Happiness’s precepts are turning
the island of Aruba into a safe haven.
The Way to Happiness’s precepts are turning the island of Aruba into a safe haven. Last Christmas season, with The Way to Happiness public service announcements airing throughout Aruba on TV, traffic fatalities on that Caribbean island dropped to zero.
A tourist island of beautiful sand beaches, Aruba is known for its vibrant nightlife and that nightlife’s worst side effect: drunk driving and the consequent fatalities, which is exactly why Aruba has opted to use The Way to Happiness. Its booklets, public service announcements and DVDs are delivering Aruba results.

Written by American author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard, The Way to Happiness is a common sense guide to better living. Through its 21 precepts, people from all walks of life gain a practical moral compass to achieve a better life.

Daily airplay of a public service announcement based on The Way to Happiness precept “Be Temperate” began in December 2009, showing on all three Aruba TV stations. By January, drunk-driving fatalities dropped to zero.

And along with alcohol abuse, other related crimes, like sexual assault, declined.

The Way to Happiness Foundation has delivered seminars based on every precept of the book to officials and other guests of Aruba, and 240,000 copies of The Way to Happiness booklets have been distributed throughout all islands of the Caribbean.

Now the campaign has expanded and yet another precept from The Way to Happiness is creating change in Aruba: #12—“Safeguard and Improve Your Environment.” The precept is fostering eco-consciousness among the island’s citizens, and Aruba has focused on community cleanups to carry out the message. One girls softball team conducted a clean-up of Aruba’s second largest city, San Nicolaas. The effort was covered by Tele-Aruba, one of the island’s major TV stations and featured by a local radio station. In came a flood of requests for The Way to Happiness booklets.

With the island so taking to heart two of the book’s precepts—“Be Temperate” and “Safeguard and Improve Your Environment”—there await infinite opportunities in the remaining 19.

The Way to Happiness Foundation will continue working hand-in-hand with Aruba officials and the island’s social betterment groups to ensure that the full message of The Way to Happiness is broadly known and used there by all its people. It has already begun to assist them in leading safer, happier lives.

Juarez Households Receive Unexpected Gift With Their Water Bills

Every household in Juárez received a copy of The Way to Happiness with a custom cover featuring one of México’s most esteemed presidents—Benito Juárez.

Citizens of Juarez might soon be the only people in the world who smile when personnel from their water company knock on their door to furnish the bill. That’s because instead of being reminded of what they owe, they are now in for a pleasant surprise.

The Way to Happiness Foundation International, in cooperation with their office in Mexico, recently arranged the distribution of 500,000 copies of The Way to Happiness (TWTH) to every household in the city of Juarez which shares a border with the US state of Texas.

This effort was in response to a call to action by Mexico’s First Lady made in April on national television. She announced her intention to implement programs to provide youth the tools they need to be able to make decisions leading to happy, free and healthy lives. “I believe that we need to work a lot harder on prevention, and not just on the subject of drugs, but of values and skills for life, and teaching our kids how to make the right decisions in difficult situations in life,” declared the First Lady.

Thus the idea for massive, city-wide distribution of TWTH was born. There are hundreds of thousands homes in the city and in order to reach themall, the Foundation needed a plan. Mr. JC Martinez, the director of the local TWTH chapter, gained the support of the Juarez TV station Channel 44. They began airing TWTH public service announcements based on the booklet twice a day and on the station’s website. Responding to the book’s positive message, calls poured in to the station from people wanting to know more about The Way to Happiness.

Mr. Martinez then enlisted the help of local youth to attach special stickers on every copy of the booklet with the motto, “Quiero mi ciudad en paz” (I want peace in my city).

Mr. Martinez also contacted the local water utility company and gained their agreement to allow their staff to hand out the booklet to every household in Juarez. Water company personnel were then equipped with backpacks filled with copies of The Way to Happiness, and distributed the booklets while also passing out monthly water bills.

With widespread interest growing, the local TWTH chapter is now scheduling a series of The Way to Happiness seminars to be delivered in production plants, schools and at the city’s university.
